The Spanish word martirio in the original title can refer either to death or to suffering that one undergoes for believing in a religion. In Raymond's case, it was not death but suffering that he underwent at the hands of the authorities in Algiers. And what suffering it was. After several arrests on suspicion of preaching to Muslims, the governor commanded that his lips be padlocked as shown here. The holes for the padlocks were bored with a hot iron.
